When do you deactivate or delete a past client from marketing?

I searched all my database and deactivated all clients who no longer own the home I cleaned.

Also any returned mailed marketing, because it is addressed to the past client is put in an inactive list once addresses is verified and correct.

If I know that they moved out of the area, I remove them right after I clean. Like you, a returned mailing will get them out of active. Even though its not the best way to run a business, I never really stay in contact with my customers, I let them call me.


I have been getting a lot of clients calling recently that I haven't cleaned for in the last few years - I would have removed from a mailing list. Most did remodeling on their house which included new flooring, so that put 2-3 years between cleanings.

The house is still there, try to find new owners or address to "new homeowner" at the same address.

why would you not want the new owner to know that you were the one maintaining the home?
i have picked up tons of "new" customers in the same old house because they felt good that we
knew the history of the carpet..that really grabs them, when you know it is a new home owner
is letting them know you know all the problem areas and were the one that fixed them or that you
know all the dirty little secrets that the carpet has is its past..grabs them every time..

Double down on that ditto. After I verify that I had the zip code ect correct.

I use a guy's service that searches for updated addresses.
If the mailing gets returned, or they contact me to remove them, then I remove them.
Even someone I haven't seen in years continues to get my mailings.

I mail to clients. People.. Meaning I don't do direct mailings to past clients with a Or Current RES.

So if the piece comes back, I put the client on inactive.

My marketing to past clients is not heavy on selling my business. They already know the benefits of using my company.


Now, just because the client sold and moved does not mean I won't market to that same house.
But the marketing is completely different..


So I have mailing lists of prospects, and mailing lists of past clients.

Pretty much in the past I only remove them if the marketing comes back. ( something I have not done a lot of in past years )

Or, I know they have moved.

I spent hours last weekend checking 100s for current ownership.

Hoping to not let the database become a mess again.

Marketing on my own is something I rarely do.

But with the change of the year comes changes in pratice.
