donno about "craftsmen" , but I wouldn't suggest they pull MDF base mold, go thru the time and expense pull nails, clean caulk and patch 'n paint just to reinstall the same 20+ year old ding'd up crap.
I'd suggest they replace with new finger jointed primed and painted hardwood base

That's what fo-reel "sec8 Hacks" would suggest if those "upper crUsty" glide barons didn't like shoe mold
..and/or was making suggestions to the billionaire club on how to doit rite

Why would anybody reinstall MDF when it's so damn cheap to begin with.
And while some might find it perfectly acceptable to embrace the swollen chipped fugly patina earned over the last 10 years, normal people would replace with solid wood and do the whole job properly, drywall damage to be damned, and dealt with.

Have you ever worked with installed, cleaned or otherwise the 30 mil LVP, especially the products with multiple size options in the same pattern? Planks can be installed ranging from 2 to 8 ft and length and 23456 all the way up to eight inches in width.... An artistic flooring craftsmen can make a hell of an impression with it..

seen some impressive "artistry" with tile (and carpet) before.


and do have some kin folk linage dating back a couple thousand years

normal people would replace with solid wood and do the whole job properly, drywall damage to be damned, and dealt with.

we'd hope.
But that's not always a reality in "normal" people's budget.
That's why they invented shoe mold

I'd pick at quarter-round as well, even though no one walks that close to the wall. Thin shoe molding is the cleaner answer.

Example of what Larry's talking about. Carpet on pad gets pulled and replaced with carpet tile, leaving a big gap. Moving the baseboard down creates a lot of work to clean up the wall, so much work that it would be better to just buy taller molding to cover the gap and the caulk line.

This is shoe molding where a damaged wood floor was pulled and replaced with vinyl. The same gap problem solved pretty cleanly. In this case the previous floating wood floor hid the uneven subfloor, while the vinyl made it obvious. The thinner shoe molding is flexible enough to bend and make the uneven floor less apparent.
