I was a neuro-surgeon until I stumbled upon carpet cleaning boards and realized THIS is where the real movers and shakers are

I would guess the common thread between all business owners is we don't make very good employees.

Could you imagine someone having to put up with you? Not me.

Worked for my dad's window cleaning company during high school (1967). Took carpet cleaning and other side jobs that our window cleaning customers wanted done. Always kept a few carpet jobs as side jobs.

When I felt compelled to quit my job at UT about 10 years later, I built the carpet cleaning side business into full time work.

Greg,
How the heck do you fail "music appreciation"? :)

PS Like many of the rest of you I was essentially "unemployable" in the corporate sector. (No education, no skills and a basically rebellious personality.) I'm grateful to this business.

out of the navy, did some night janitorial, started working for The Bay In Home Cleaning using a Ninja.
year and half later, decided I could work for myself. dad loaned me money to buy a portable. Just kept asking questions, how do I do this, how do I do that?

In 1970 when I was 20 years old I was asked if I wanted to go into business starting a new type of carpet cleaning called steam cleaning. I did, and have been a self employed carpet cleaner, doing all my own cleaning without employees, ever since.

Mike, I remember those ads around So Cal in the 80s and 90's. Make up to 1k per week! 5.95 per room! Miller's had such a bad reputation around here but they were everywhere! I haven't seen a Miller's add in years...Is Sam Miller any relation? What ever happen to the old Millers Carpet Care?

Re: Where'd you come from, how'd you get into the CC busines

And just for the record, I actally had Millers clean my 1 bedroom apartment back in the late 80's...This was before I started in the cleaning biz...Carpet wasnt real dirty and I insisted on seeing what they would do for for the low ball price...The guy tried to upsell me but I didnt budge...He got irritated and said I was just going to get a "Water Rinse" for that price. I said fine and he did it with his porty and I dont remember it looking to bad, but I remember feeling sorry for that poor guy! They really set the bar low around here back then with all the cheap skates like me! I felt like I got my 12 dollars worth!
