Got my ass kicked today by a traffic lane on a light cream wool/acrylic blend area rug that a customer wanted to try to salvage.

Barely any improvement even after scrubbing it, and throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it.

Looked like the fibers were grayed out all the way down to the backing.

I thought cheap polyester was as bad as it could get, but it seemed like this stuff has even less integrity.

I haven't come across this stuff before, so is it just me, or are acrylic fibers as bad as they seem??

Acrylic fibers are as bad as they seem. Probably second only to rayon as a poor choice for carpeting. A wool/acrylic combo needs to be at least 50% wool to perform, less wool and it might as well have none.
