Hey Everyone,

While I was cleaning wool stairs yesterday, there was fiber loss on the edge where the face meets the tread. Pretty significant - about an inch wide, on several stairs. It exposed the backing. It wasn’t immediately noticeable since it was dark. You can pluck at the fibers and pull them out. Oddly not on the tread, just in the areas with no traffic.

Safe cleaners were used. Not over wetted. No peroxide. Doesn’t get direct sunl

Dry rot? Bugs? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I'd ask if they had pest control spraying around...they could have used something that damaged the wool. And where the carpet wasn't used or touched, the chemical wasn't rubbed off and had more time to cause damage.

Simple Wear if over 20 plus yrs .
It's a extremely durable.
An there is no mention of a agent that would have accelerated wear.
Although an oxi product over time.
Might not show discoloration.
But oxidizing would decimate the outer layer...
Other then that I surmise wear.
Picture be great ...
Regards an have a great day...me.

Hmmm reread, you said no traffic on the tread...hmmm truly interesting.
Friction burns from heavy to non heavy.
Was there dragging of an excessive nature possibly.
???
