Jim as in Pemberton..

Tom cat wizzed all over a down filled 100% cotton sofa. ( no latex or woven backing)
Urine is deep into the cushions but not too bad on the frame but I can still smell it after a half hour soak in Quat A Lot.
I've pretty much convinced the owner to toss the cushion stuffing and I brought the covers home to give them a good soaking in QAL.

I wonder how the Sofa King would have dealt with this one.

Human and cat urine is tough ... and OAL may not be the only one ... but it sure won't do the trick on either of those two.

I just checked on them

Soaking in a 5 gallon bucket in QAL for 2 hours and they still reek.

Now I'll try citric acid and Bac Out over night then Dynocide in the AM.

I hope you convinced the owner to toss the cat also. Otherwise prepare to repeat the process if it works.

This will be a tough one Mike.

The secret of urine decontamination is always getting the product to the urine, and the construction of most upholstery defies you to do that.

And cotton, of course, is so absorbent that getting a sufficient amount of product throughout the cotton could cause damage.

I'm guessing you'll need to get the Quat A Lot rinsed out pretty well, as it might interfere with the Bac Out. Is Bac Out compatible with Citric Acid? Most enzyme products aren't.

Our cleaning company had a sofa soaked in lion (yes, a full sized African male) urine. It stunk out our building so badly we had to treat it outside. We used Un Duz It from Unsmoke.

It took a week, but finally we got it out. It was polyester, though.

Nothing beats Urinse and Un Duz it from Unsmoke for cat urine. Jim recommended it to me about twenty five years ago.

To get the urine treatment deep into the stuffing you'll need something that can neutralize the urine salts without the need for flushing or extraction afterwards, and apply it with the carpet cleaning industries equivilent to a medical hypodermic syringe and an extra long needle. Remember to penetrate the piece from the back so as not to damage the face fibers of the piece. You can use a spotting claw from the front afterward to try and extract some of the excess product and prevent that deep wettness. It's probably still a total loss anyway, but you can try.

My mistake folks. I miss-read the original post and gave my opinion on treating synthetic stuffing, not down stuffing. Thank you Bill Yaedon for bringing that to my attention.

Finished with the covers today. 99% gone and they are still in one piece and the color looks fine.

I get so tired of being a hero all the time.

Odorcide and a 6mil garbage bag would have taken care of it on the job.

Yeah, but who in their right minds would ever want to be within 200 feet of a sofa reAking of Odorcide?
