Yellow Finsh on VCT

The first time in 25 yrs a vct floor kicked my ass. Stripper and a new black pad would not touch the finish on the tiles. Even tried undiluted stripper, with no difference. Sledgehammer plus was the stripper which I use all the time. Any ideas of what was put down.

White spots are were the finish has wore off. Pics are after I tried to strip.

I’m no guru, but in your place I’d try a brown abrasive pad and water, to wet sand whatever that is off. However, you are unlikely to get a perfectly even shade with an old, weathered and beaten surface. I suppose you could run a hand grinder over it with a piece of the brown abrasive pad, to get in the scoops and hollows, but wow, the work!

On the bright side, once refinished a lot of that variation seems to vanish.

I can’t tell from the pictures but if that is 1 x 1 tile, those tiles are asbestos. If that is the case you can never dry strip that. In those cases there is just a huge accumulation of built up finish so you can put a shine on it but not much else.

Floor looks trashed anyway. You can't polish a turd.

9x9 is suspect for acm but not always. 1x1' less so but...test test test.

It actually looks like wear pattern. I wouldn’t grind on it anymore. It is what it is. Clique. At most, do one coat of sealer, #oldschool, then finish. You can too polish a turd, it just won’t look fresh as a daisy again.
