I am going to purchase a small procap machine or host system and use a fivestar type portable for smaller jobs and raise my prices even more. All I need is a vacuum, pump sprayer, bucket, a few chems in small bottles, and my small extractor. I can do 4 jobs a week and bring in over 1500 dollars which most will be profit. I will still use the bigger tm on most jobs, but this setup will be great for larger homes that are spread out. My selling point is a thorough job, not the biggest machine. Usually when someone buys the biggest badest whatever they are usually compensating for something that is missing.
To make a point I have seen several guys buy tm's and one bought a brand spanking new Vortex to target commercial (mostly restaurants) and you can guess how that is working out. I guess they thought they were going to dominate that market. Please!!!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm no longer the 7 years and know it all anymore.
Brian R said:Any carpet cleaning work that is saved by a V is made up in maintenance, price, gas etc.
It's just carpet, how much power do you need?
danielc said:Harper I own everything outright and I am getting ready to purchase a second investment property. That is irrelevant. This thread is about Marty selling his V. I always value your opinion. Tell me why I shouldn’t invest in some portable equipment for smaller jobs. I am not talking about ditching the tm just using different tools for certain applications. For small carpet or upholstery jobs etc why not use a smaller setup?
Heck I even thought about installing my Legend in a smaller truck and running it more. I don't do a lot of volume but I don't need to. My overhead is really low and I have a nice job average. I am not making millions, but I do ok.
Just tell me why I should buy a 100k dollar machine to clean carpet when I can use a smaller setup and do 1/10 the work and make the same money. I have come to realize that the number one reason people call or refer a company is having people they feel comfortable with in their home. That is more important than any piece of equipment.
danielc said:Harper you are funny. Plenty of cash in the bank, owning two mint homes and fixing to be three plus all of my equipment, and no debt will prevent me from ever slinging suds. I was actually a pretty good stock investor for about three years and made some impressive gains. Then it got to be too complicated so I dumped all my money in some nice houses and it is working out nice. My mentor works with a 175 and small portable and averages a couple grand per week. I am just trying to work smart not hard, keep as much as I can, invest properly, and retire at a young age. If I could knock out 250k with one truck and a helper while keeping overhead low, I would take that any day over a large multi truck company. I will get there one day. I like to keep things simple. I can’t deal with the stress. I like knowing if I had to take some time off I don’t have to worry about a mortgage, yp ad, or truck payment. You still haven’t convinced me why I should own a gas guzzling 60k plus truck to clean residential carpet. I would never sell my Everest. I LOVE that machine. You should know how great it is. I am just thinking about my options.
I was thinking about Brian the other day when I booked eight jobs from referrals. That is huge as I average about two to three per week. My customers just want someone honest they can trust in their home and a good job. I don’t need a V to do that. So yes Brian a small company can grow and do quite well off referrals and repeats and more importantly grow cash in the bank.
my phone bill is going to drop considerably........

Harper every guy needs a nice ride to go out in. It’s kind of hard to socialize in a carpet cleaning van. I started hanging out with a beautiful Columbian girl visiting her uncle for a few weeks (one of my customer’s that is an endocrinologist) and said “F” it I need a new truck. It was a spur of the moment thing. I went to just look at trucks and damn if I didn’t drive off the lot with one. I told the sales guy he did a hell of a job. Once you get in a new ride and test drive it, not buying is hard. And this was the exact truck I was looking for. I am going to say it was well worth the money plus I have a very nice paid for truck that will last me for years. I had been meaning to get one for some time and I had the money so why not.
I am thinking about selling one of my vans and getting a brand new van. Both of my vans are in great shape, but nothing impresses like a new truck imo. If I pay 20k for a newer or less than 10k miles and average 20kmiles per year, I can sell it 5 years later for 8-10k as long as I take care of it. What are your thoughts on that?
