mostly cause he was just anal about working out of a cluttered disheveled mess.
Everything about him was that way ...
you could eat off the floor of his 14 year old car
and if you looked in his backyard 8x10 metal shed, you wouldn't find an uncleaned rake, shovel or tool out of place .

Hell, you wouldn't even find a blade of grass on his mower before he put it away

He used to pi55 'n moan every time I had the van out

his words were

"you got about a GD mess, don't cha"

Some days just having them wipe of the top of the Butler waste tank each time they drag the hoses in.

Or wrap the hoses at least decent!

Heck, fill the damn thing up with gas at the end of the day so they are ready for the first job the next morning.

I started to make the first 30 minutes of the day as restock, look over and fill out the Butler log for warranty as part of the work day. Everyone is too tired at the end of the day so at least the first 30 minutes to an hour of the day is prepping the van.

Every night in the winter is required to at least rinse the salt and ice and crap off the van.

Otherwise the morning is prep and go.

Damn vans are still messy at times and it would just take one or two swipes with a rag to make it look a little decent!

Its more of a personality type than a sense of duty or loyalty. My late best friend would spend a few minutes when he visited my house just arranging my book shelves back into matching order.

My stepson now works in my service department. Its never been cleaner or neater. I think he spends each day contemplating how he could murder the other mechanics here and get away with it, as they are far less than neat.

His rants about how messy his mother and sisters with whom he lives are as good as anything from Lewis Black.

I can vouch for that I've been to his house twice and it's immaculate!

My guys do ok, I have them follow a weekly checklist for maintenance, and cleaning/organizing inside and out. I tell them I'm super anal about it to push them into taking decent care of the vans and so far it works pretty well.

I love a clean truck BUT I also know in the heat of the battle it's almost impossible. I prefer they make hay when we can and once there is a break get it corrected.

We also went through them throughly in the winter, giving them a face lift. Painting reels, cleaning the machine, tools and replacing carpet as needed.

We have quite a few guys that keep trucks looking better than I ever did. I try to make it easy for them to stay organized though.
An incentive is that new trucks go to the techs that keep their current trucks nicest. Less attentives get the hand me downs and disorganized slobs get to work somewhere else.

Our top producers are the ones that have showroom clean trucks. We make sure new employees ride with them early in their tenure so they can see that being fast and keeping the truck nice can work. I'm like you and would give guys a break on the upkeep, so stay out of this part of training.

Who knows. He is the risk taker, I was the conservative. He could do even better without me holding him back.
I have two nephews that are very successful house flippers. The younger one said he's learned to be grateful for his more careful brother, because that hand on his collar keeps him from running off a cliff.

That's a great analogy
