For stairs, they can’t be beat... DON’T go with the homeowner model... shorter cord (30’), and a smaller motor...the professional model has a 50’ cord, and larger motor. And, on startup, ALWAYS HAVE THE UNIT LIFTED UP.... will extend motor life by triple....

These are condo buildings not houses. They build them without considering how the carpets are to be cleaned. Very limited access, sometimes 500-600 ft hose runs if they are accessible at all. Often there are no janitorial rooms, sinks or bathrooms. You have to bring your own cleaning solutions pre mixed. You can either say no because my truck mount can't reach or find another way. Several good ideas above for encapping stairs. The Oreck Orbiter is good for stairs. A small rotary/175 can also be used. The Orbot Micro is another good option.
Another simple approach is to use a Drill Driver attached to a drill or an angle grinder.
