The usual concerns of cleaning hand-knotted rugs on site. These are often made with some pretty soft wool, so felting problems may be greater. Dye bleed should not be a problem unless there's some "art silk" involved.

Even if lightly cleaned, they're going to be wet for awhile.

They have enough value that actual soil should be removed at a rug shop. Charge enough to be worth the risks you're taking.

They're waaay out in the boonies of Yerington NV, when not at their San Francisco penthouse which she was at today when we were talking when an emergency flash flood interruption came through on her phone and she sort of politely hung up and said she'd call back assuming she lived through this tragedy.

Some of their rugs are made with viscose/bamboo silk. Even the rugs in their catalog where the rugs are listed as 100% silk-- Are disclosed to be fake silk further into the details.
Wasn't Bamboo silk the worse performer in tests of different fake silks?
The designer is Arminian. One of my Rug cleaning instructors, who was an Arminian-- advised-- Never to trust an Arminian. :eekk: 🤷‍♀️🤣

Correct me if I'm wrong

Are you asking if you should have concerns?

I have a hunch you've decided what to do, and you don't have concerns, but want to see if we do...and any answer we give....well see below.

Tufenkian has a few different product lines, so "a few of these" doesn't cut it.

LOL, some things never change

Can they be cleaned in place or do they need to be moved to the driveway or patio?

Preferable. they can be cleaned in place so no chance of damage if they fold like a taco when lifting.

1. Mist them down with woolsafe encap or wool detergent of choice.

2. Maybe a quick manual scrub.

3. Rinse

4. Mist down a coat of solvent protector (protects, speeds up drying, stays clean longer)

5. Finish with grooming rake

6. Blow dry while packing the van and collecting payment.

Right?

I would probably assure them that you will be using low heat and will hand wash them as recommended by the manufacturer. Using a truckmount extractor is part of the hand washing process

"

Washing

We recommend Tufenkian Rugs be washed by hand every three to six years depending on the amount of foot traffic. Our rugs should not be steam cleaned. Heat strong detergents and spotting chemicals used in steam cleaning can cause damage resulting in color run and a decreased lifespan of your textile."

I despise having a rug fold like a taco when moving them.

I've never tried this, but if the rugs need to be moved maybe bring a long 2"x4" wrapped in astroturf, slide it through the middle of the rolled-up rug, and lift from both ends so that the entire rug is supported evenly. just a thought.

  • Can I safely clean it without causing harm to the face fibers or foundation- Have choices for agitation devices on your work vehicle? Be prepared to offer a low moisture alternative (see Methods section)
  • Is there urine or feces in the rug- Moderate to severe contamination should be dealt with at a rug shop where complete flushing can be performed. Color loss, shift or staining is very common when most fibers are exposed to urine so be sure to qualify prior to starting.
  • Will it shrink or distort in some way- Many natural fiber and foundation rugs can shrink or distort if wet-cleaned and not blocked as it dries, us a low moisture process if unsure.
  • Will the colors bleed? Testing can be performed to check for bleeding, but to be reliable at least 12 hours of exposure to your chosen wet product should be counted on. Use Compound/CRB if there is any risk.
  • How do I protect the floor beneath from moisture- Installing Visqueen under the rug is usually the best option to protect moisture -sensitive floors. Cleaning the rug in the customer’s garage or deck is another. Discuss with the customer and let them choose what works best for them some thinner style rugs can dry very fast if cleaned outside and left to dry in the warm sun. Make sure the customer can safely get the rug back in place if moved from the original location
  • Does the rug and chosen method need accelerated drying- Leaving carpet drying fans is an option, moving the rug outside is another. Low moisture processes may be the best choice if the customer need to use the rug the same day. Some smaller rugs may be dried on a line or fence or deck rail in some cases. Increasing air flow in the cleaning location either with the HVAC system and ceiling fans or opening windows is highly recommended.
  • Is there a fringe and can I clean it in the home- Cotton or synthetic fringes can often be gently cleaned in the home if there is a safe surface on which to perform a light cleaning. A section of thick plastic tarp or a piece of LVP plank makes a great platform to do so on. Cotton fabric shampoo and or a high solvent low pH spotter such as Bridgepoint Avenge or a neutral Encap make great fringe cleaner. Mist, then gently scrub with a horsehair brush with an Upholstery Mitt and extract with your Upholstery tool. Because you won’t be hanging the rug to dry, browning is rare.

A caller said that she has heard from two sources that her wool Tufenkian rugs can not get wet-- so she will be looking for an alternative cleaning company specializing in the Dry method.
I responded: "If wool couldn't get wet, then Sheep would have to be indoor animals.
I informed her that I had the Dry compound method available, but it's inferior to water extraction.

Tell that to the 100 MF attendees who all declared HOST the winner in a cleaning method challange we held at an eraly MF at a filthy skating rink.

"Hey kids, how about we all go over to the skating ring, drink some Kool-Aid, and do a cleaning method challenge".

Is that how it went?

spoken like a guy who is losing work to a Chem Dry...

Ouch! That really hurts! - good way to kick a man when he's down and recovering from being mauled half to death by a psycho pit bull, on Christmas eve, while delivering cheer, food and gifts to the needy. Where's your compassion man???

Do you really want to hurt me?

Do you really want to make me cry?

Speaking of Kool-Aid.

How do you like Tops PadCap Pro Concentrate?

If I'm doing the math correctly:

Release-it cost $70 per gallon. mixed @ 3 oz per gal = $ 1.54 per/gal RTU

Tops PadCap Pro Concentrate cost $92 per gallon. mixed @ 1 oz per gal = $0.72 per/gal RTU

PadCap Pro is basically half the cost of Release-It.

Dang! You're right @Raser Hayes ...

I just followed the link you posted and found Release-It for $175 per case or $43.75 per gal. Thank you!

The only vendor in town that sells Release-it charges $240 per case or $60 + tax per gallon. No discount for purchasing cases.

I like to support my local vendor but the time has come to find a new source for encap.

Wow! That's super cool!

Thank you very much for the offer brother. I've been away from MB so long that I didn't realize the Fest was this weekend until just a few days ago.

I'll check the flights (and with the wife) and let you know.

Definitely a maybe.
