Yesterday the truck starts throwing codes. So I come home and find out that the truck is running not up to temp. Only staying around 165, so I think thermostat is stuck open. No problem finish day and clean this morning two jobs. Change thermostat and same thing happens. My question is what does the billet aluminum housing thingy do on the top radiator hose. It looks like a thermostat housing, but I don't think it opens. Does any one know if there is a thermostat in that thing.

If it is similar to the vortex it does. On our 777s there is only one thermostat though.

And the housing comes apart in two halves.

Have you checked the codes?

You can go to autozone or similar and have them run the codes using there cheapo scanner.. Then chech out on google what the codes are in relation to your vehicle. That's just one way of narrowing down what could be wrong.

since you've ruled out an open thermostat it is most likely the coolant temperature sensor..............
