There is an old saying something like "youth is wasted on the young". In my teens I knew all there was to know, in my 20's I was pretty sure I know more than anybody, in the my 30's I realized I wasn't the center of the universe, and in my 40's and now early 50's I know I don;t know squat.
LOL
I lived that one, when I was 20 my father sent me to Phoenix to attend a Disaster Cleanup class Lee Pemberton was instructing there.

Being twenty I was just excited to go the big city and see the desert. Going to class was just a means to and end.

I sat in class for two days and took notes, watched slides of some of the nastiest work I had ever seen. All the time I kept thinking "we are carpet cleaners", we don't do this stuff.

Lee was full of information and went into great detail about how to process the work. Where to buy the equipment, the chemicals, how to use them, and how to bill it.

I left thinking yea Lee knows a lot but he doesn't know us, we are carpet cleaners, he just doesn't get it.

A decade later I realized I was in the presence of genius, Lee was man before his time, he was doing all he could to help me and I was to young, too dumb to realize it. Now I realize that Lee knew what we could become, and I was only looking at who we were.

Our company benefited greatly from what little I was able to take away from the class, but nothing like what we could have had I been mature enough to extract all I could from Lee.

Now I'm not knocking Daniel, his calculations look accurate, especially from his perspective, but there are many ways to skin a cat.
What about commercial work?

I'm not talking fast food restaurants or video stores, but corporate work where your job average jumps up there and you're more profitable because your actually producing instead of driving.

Water Damage? Even as a 1-man operation, your customers still have water losses, that are going to be larger tickets than just carpet cleaning.

Pet odor removal? Dirty work, but as with anything undesirable, better pay.

Upholstery specialist? Not the standard care crap that anyone can clean, but the kind that takes more brain and less brawn.

These are just a few , but there are lots of ways to increase your sale without working yourself to death.

Sometimes you have to take a chance on your future and decide what you want to be. Gene pretty much nailed. There are a million reasons why not but you just need one why. No one said getting rich is easy but if you want to be you gotta take your shot. Some guys have and decided to go back to what they were comfortable in.

I was a huge success a month ago but I am cash strapped in the business right now. I just get ahead a couple days ago and bam another huge snow storm. I called all the people who owe me money and next Thursday seems like the big check pick up day. It is a chink in my armour to call people and say fork over the cash. Now we are looking at another storm Tuesday. Thank goodness for the VCT and rugs. I got the daycare bill today and looked at wifey and said "all yours babe and take the oil bill with ya"

I started out as owner op and now have 6 vans and will be adding at least 2 more by spring just to keep up with the work. We've been fixed pricing for many years. When other cleaners were laughing at us we were slowly building business and taking market share away customer by customer. Was told a thousand times it wouldnt work. Now when a lot of cleaners are going out of business we have a waiting list. We Practice the KISS method and it has worked well for both us and the customer. QUIT connfusing yourself and your customers! I'm not knocking any particular method of how you want to run the numbers but I'm living proof that it works well other ways too. shiteatinggrin

I tried the fixed pricing in an ad in my area... I got 2 calls off of it.. And I normally get 80 or so on this coupon.. But I tried it in a different state and its doing better there.. I tried it in my area and customers didnt bite.... but It was pretty decent in the nashville area

So, 3,000 a week x 45 week = $135,000 x 60% = $81,000 so I do this all by myself

Now I have a 2nd van that is paid for and all my advertising is paid for this is my back up van so Ins. is paid for out of the $54,000 from the one van I run. Now I pay 25% for labor. Gas at 7% and chemicals at 3% for the 2nd van. I would say about 6% for van upkeep also. So, that is 41% off the gross. That leaves you with 59% net. on the 2nd van. If this van does $70,000 you would net $41,300 on that van.

Both vans would net you $121,300

now these are my numbers that I do

Good numbers! As the old saying goes... "You make more money when others work for you...rather than you working for them."
