Ive been looking for a used 175 on Craigslist and finally got a pretty good deal. 125 bucks including a brush and a tank.

When I got it home I notice that the bristles on the brush were all bent at about 30 degrees in one direction.
I imagine this is somewhat normal, but how much of a bend is too much?
Will this adversely affect the performance?
Any way to correct it, or leave it alone?

No correction needed! That is what's called "broke in" and is the desired state of a brush.

However from now on do not store the machine sitting on the brush. ALWAYS take the brush off or set the machine with the brush in the up position.

That's a nice looking 175 boss man. Brush looks nice and broken in. All I ever use is a brush with the 175. Run it on a presprayed carpet to avoid damage to the carpet.

You got a deal. I paid $70 for my tank and $75 for my brush and the the brush is broke in too.
If you ever buy a new brush like that make sure you prespray the carpet well. When I got my new brush I almost went into a wall twice, it took hours to break it in.

Yea, the brush and tank were the kicker.
Guy was only asking 150 and said it used to be his dad's.
45 minute drive but obviously well worth it.
Can't wait to give it a whirl.

The best way to break in a brush is to run it first on wet /soapy concrete.

Not carpet.

I ran it my drive way for 1/2 hour and it still would grab the carpet. I make sure I spray the carpet good where I'm going to start.

ever run a rotary before??
If not, start in an open area.
if after 10 seconds it's not easy to you, you're doing it wrong....find the balance point

a couple generations ago it was .
Before squirt 'N suck cleaning happened, the Ole School way was to shampoo with a rotary and brush

I reckon gOOmer wil use it most to scrub pre-spray before extraction with TM or porty

I believe the "only 1 post" guy asked the question so he could "score" some backlinks back to his site, being this a carpet cleaning forum, and he has his site on the signature slot. I've noticed quite a bit of people doing this, even the rotovac guy had a thread about what people think about the Turbo spinner w/ a link back to his site (which he sells the machine). It's all seo tricks some of these guys are doing.

I rented one from a local tool shop a few times to try it out before I committed to buying one. I gotta say it makes a world of difference when you scrub a carpet with a heavy machine like a 175. I love the way it BLASTS through the crud.
The first time I used one was with a new red pad. I almost dislocated both wrists as it twisted me like like a around like a pretzel. I must have looked like a moron for the first 15 minutes so I'm glad no one was watching. Those motors have a lot of torque and should be respected.
My first goal was to keep it in the same place while running, but I found that really hard until I optimized the handle height to where I could brace it against waist. I find them really hard to control if the handle isn't perfect. Once the handle felt comfortable it was all about balancing like you mentioned. As far as moving it while its running the first thing that comes to mind is the 95 pound girl being pulled all over by the 200 pound Mastiff. Again, I must have looked like a real jackass, but after face-planting into a couple of walls, you realize all it takes is SLIGHT pressure on the handles to steer it it gets a lot easier. As Tony Robbins says, "Repetition is the mother of all skill". Practice practice practice.
I used the brush last night on CGD and I found it a lot easier to control than a pad, but at times I wished I had the bite of a pad. It still worked well though.

I'm curious about different scrub patterns.
I notice it seems to bite best when moved forward/up due to the rotation, when applying a little downward pressure on the right side of the handle, but that does not seem too efficient.
Does everyone prefer the "right to left, left to right, drop down overlap"?

I knew you was sharp dude that can figure things out !gotcha!

Buy a pad driver for it now.
Then you'll more options from aggressive VCT pads to bonnets for com

Thanks, I have short moments of clarity amongst the fog.

Those are definitely the 3 basic keys to running a 175.

Looking for a pad driver already. shiteatinggrin

The bent bristles are from the pad driver not being removed after use of the machine by the looks of how it's laying out.

If it becomes an issue holding pads, a new driver is usually less than 75.00
