A big thanks to Tom Monahan and Doug Heiferman for putting on a great class. Talk about two guys that could not be more different. If you respond better to different ways of learning, between the two of them, they got the spectrum covered. I know this class was only really an intro to the world of cleaning but it was packed with hands on experience and information. I truly feel It was worth the money.

I really like Tom’s approach to rug cleaning. Simple and makes sense. Not a ton of chemicals needed, just about 4 that do the job beautifully. It’s an approach I’ll be adopting in my rug business.

Here is a bit of video from the class. I know Marty and Jimmy won’t last 15 seconds. Pics coming also. @Chris A , I got you in there a few times.

So who were your classmates, in general....
God, don't ask me that. I'm terrible are remembering people's names. I have to do all sorts of mind tricks with myself to remember. A lot of the guys were from Ohio. A couple were ***'ers, one dude was running over 70 trucks. The Iraq guy had a rug shop and there was another guy there who's company just bought all new centrumforce equipment and was sending him to the class. It was a good mix and a lot of energy going around.

So the next morning I had some time to kill before my flight left. I was lucky enough to meet up with @Brian H from Hagopian and he generously gave me a tour of his plant. I had no Idea how massive and what an industrialized operation Brian runs. It was truly impressive so see something of this scale. The pictures do not do it justice in trying to present the scale of things. The drying room and conveyor system for rug transport was incredible. Thank you so much Brian for taking the time to show this Redding small fry your operation. Truly appreciated!

I'll add to Damon's post, lots of vets in the business, most are cleaning 5-10 rugs per week in some capacity, a couple 20-30. Tom has a very no nonsense non Rugf*g approach to cleaning, Doug is Doug lol, high energy and opinionated but he truly wants to see people succeed. If nothing else, it was worth the $400 to see a real working, medium volume shop, and I definitely picked up a few tidbits and saw where I can improve my cleaning without spending a ton of money right now (I'm in the 5-10 rug a week camp as well). There were two other guys from my service area there, one whom I'm friends with, another I didn't know but was real friendly, overall I'd say it was a really good experience, definitely doesn't cover everything your going to see as a rug cleaner but it's a good cheap intro.

You're going to get yourself a nasty copyright infringement letter with lots of typos from the original Rug Spa dude. He has a fit when anyone uses the term "Rug Spa". I have been searching the interwebs but I can't seem to find it. Maybe he backed off. @FredC , do you have it archived somewhere in your vast vault of blackmail material?

Well, I just did a Google Copyright search and there is no Rug Spa term locked down. So, feel free :) I guess that guy was just blowing smoke with his typo filled letters.

I can't wait to open Rydell's Rug Spa!

Here are some pics I dug off my phone. Rugs get dusted (kinda) on plastic pallets in another area. Then they get washed in the front part of this white room, there is a floor drain but the slope isn't ideal, I plan on changing that this winter, with the drying poles in the rear section. I use a warn 1000lb AC winch to lift and lower the poles. I have 7 14 foot poles hooked to eyebolts that go through the block, I have 3 more poles that need installed. I might fill the poles twice in a year, usually I'm around 5-7 rugs a week. Half are synthetic or tufted, 25 percent karastans, then a quarter or so hand made wool rugs. I have no intentions of taking over the rug world but I would like to get to 20-25 rugs a week. IMG_20170503_130059.jpg

It gets a lot of water out, a lot more than I was able to do with a wand it water claw. I'm at about 36 hours to be fully dry with one dehu and fans, I do add heat to that room in the winter to get it up to about 80

Chris, did you install that trench system? Also, nice hanging system. Can you post a pic of your winch?

No the drain was there. Part of the floor slopes away from the drain which is a problem lol but I'm fixing that this winter. I'll get a pic of the winch tomorrow I just replaced the first one, but it was a harbor freight pos

Either lots of heat, OR, a big, commercial dehu is what you are going to need to get them dry, that, and lots of fans.....
Drying rugs is just like drying clothes: heat in, move air, exhaust damp hot air. While a dehu might throw some heat into the air, it's been proven by no less than the folks at Dri-Eaz that even big dehumidifiers are comparatively ineffective unless you're drying rugs in the hot and steamy jungle.

You're going to get yourself a nasty copyright infringement letter with lots of typos from the original Rug Spa dude. He has a fit when anyone uses the term "Rug Spa".
Just to clarify, the Rug Spa guy had an idea for a mail-in program for rug cleaning, did the proper copyright search that any business owner should do when they choose a name, and copyrighted Rug Spa.

Another guy comes along, likes the name, and tells all of his followers to call their rug departments rug spas, and by the way, rename your business Rug Spa. All of the followers follow without a single one of them doing any research, and then get pissed off that they can't use his legally copyrighted name.

Sorry Damon, there's no argument here. People that illegally used a copyrighted name, or bitch about getting shut down for illegally using that name, are angry at the wrong person.

I disagree on dehumidifiers. If they work on flood jobs, they will also work in drying rooms.
