I have battled hearing issues for many years now, I went deaf in my right ear a few years ago and was told by my Otologist that there was a chance the same thing could happen to my other ear. There was nothing he knew of to do but try hearing aids but it would probably come to a point that my only hope would be a cochlear implant that is $60,000 that I don't have. I haven't ever made alot of money in this business but I relly enjoy it. I have gradually lost hearing in that ear for a while now but I was still able to go about my normal routine for the most part. Last Tuesday what I had left in that ear all of a sudden went away. I can still communicate in person but that is a struggle no phone at all only text msg. or email. to contact people.

My wife has always answered the phone and did data entry, but has never gone on cleaning appointments with me. We have decided that she will go with me on the truck and be my ears and help all she can, don't know how that will work time will tell. In the meantime I am not going to give up I am going to try some alternative medicine and see how that goes since traditional hasn't given me much hope. Wish me luck I am going to place this in Gods hands.

very sorry for your loss Bobby.

keep researching alternatives as you already are. working 24/7 with the wife can be a challenge for some, but we got used to it. i am sure she will be an awesome helper somewhat amus now she'll get to see what you've been doing all these years.

keep that positive attitude!

Thanks for letting us know of your struggles.

You said you like the business and with your wife being so understanding it will help you keep a positive attitude.

I'm sure you will adapt and as much as this is a very unfortunate thing to happen, much worse things could have happened in your life.

Keep your chin up and good luck with everything.

Main thing is don't get discouraged and don't give up p. it is a big hurdle in front of you but you can surpass and succeed. Working with the wife is going to take much patience. I would seek multiple consultations with different docters to see of they are all on the same page. Try a nutritionist, not one at 24hr fitness but a true nutritionist that has a good track record.

Thanks guys!!
I have been to two otologist already and been told the same thing by both. All either of them seemed intrested in was selling me a hearing aid and the one who spoke of the cochlear implant just happened to do those too.

I have an appointment with a traditional Chinese Dr. on Jan. 4th she does the chinese herbs accupuncture and nutrition, I sent her a detailed email of what was happening, she called and my wife talked to her and she thinks she can help.

i haven't either , and i can't even say I "really" enjoy it

It's awful that you're losing your hearing .
is this loud noise related lose , age, medical condition, or all three causing the lose??

if both ear docs suggested a hearing aid, why not have 'em make you one??
they're very sophisticated devises these days...made/tuned specifically to the individuals needs.
not at all like the simple cheap sound amplification aids you can buy over the counter

Wouldn't a correct hearing aid prolong your hearing ..in turn prolong your ability to work as you're used to?

Larry: I suffer from Menieres disease and also eustchian tube disfunction, the ETD is when the tubes don't open and allow the excess fuid to drain from your middle ear and equalize the pressure, that is what the popping is when flying or scuba diving. you will also experience the pop when you yawn or swallow. The Menieres is vertigo and the actual hearing loss. The ETD leaves me with constant pressure in my ear much like you get with a cold.
A hearing Aid may help but I want make sure I try all other avenues first and let that be a last resort.
Thanks for your concern.

I am almost deaf in one ear and can't here worth a crap out of the other.....been that way for a long time...I have hearing aids but they are to much of a pain in the ass around equipment and in the wind.....

I have 4 really screwed up disk in my neck and 5 specialist telling me that I can't do this any more....

screw that...I like what I do and have way to much invested in it to walk away.....so you just make adjustments and keep plugging away at it..

That could be my tagline ... I haven't made much, and during a few years actually managed to lose some coin, but I sure do enjoy it.

I wish you well ... I have seen folks with really severe hearing loss function good as new with proper hearing aids. If it were me, I'd be willing to give them a try.

Funny you mention this. Couple of weeks ago at my Bni meeting we had a presentation by a hearing aid dispenser. He mentioned that there is a new type of hearing aid that chanels frequency to the bone for hearing.

Most hearing aids just amplify sound and this does something completly different. I would go to a higher end hearing aid place and let them test you. Not much to lose, and lots to gain.

Im sorry about your situation. On the brite side having a wife that can do the hearing for you is a blessing . I know there are alot of us whose significant others either have other jobs or for one reason or another couldnt come help. I couldnt imagine being in your place , however with a good attitude and a little faith Im sure you can overcome this. Ten years ago I was living a very differant life. Before I got my life together I was a fifth a day alchoholic and drug addict. At the end I was homeless for a year pretty well gave up. I managed to somehow get sober and pull my life together 8.5 years sober. Im not sure how my drug abuse story relates to your hearing but I guess all Im saying is try and stay positive and dont give up. I often complain about my business but hearing posts like yours makes me remember my past and why I am greatfull for all the blessings I enjoy today. Good luck and stay positive

Thanks Jon it could always be worse, yep Willy I have been around the boards off & on for many years, with this happening I found this helps cause watching tv and reading closed captioning ain't no fun it's hard to read and watch but I can still watch sports don't really need any sound for that.

I was at a party over the holiday and someone with a speech loss was using a ipad that spoke for him with phrases. I wonder if something like that might be out there for your hearing loss. Or maybe an app to help.

Sorry to learn of your hearing troubles.

Most areas have a relay telephone system available. Calls to you are routed through a hearing person who then types the information for you to see on a screen. You type your reply and it is read aloud by the relay operator. Thus you can communicate over the telephone even if you can't hear.

You may also benefit from classes in using American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate.
