If it was AVG popping up a little message in the task bar saying that it recently stopped several threats, it is just AVG wanting you to buy something. I have the free version, and AVG keeps trying to get me to buy a newer version.

AVG used to do that with many pop-ups.

I use Avast now, no problem.
