I lifted a halogen lamb into a moving ceiling fan today.

Happily, this was on the tile not the carpet as it went into a Gazillion small fragments. The customer was closely supervising me at the time as she did though the course of the five hour job. I took about $150 off her bill. At least it was not one of her priceless crystal knickknacks. I knew that it would be a cluster fook of a job when I bid it but it was a referral. I am developing a real distaste for residential work. I guess I need to start running a 2 man crew at all times and charge more, or tell customers, I don’t move furniture.

???????????

Seriously, those fookers are hot!!
It would have been easy to find all the fragments if it was carpet by following all the burn holes.

I call those tall tower halogen lamps "curtain burners" A couple of apartments burned down a few years ago because they were put too close to some fancy window dressing.

Charge more either way, 1-man or two. Residential is a lot slower that commercial with pitfalls throughout the home.

Sh*t happens when you're in enough homes, don't worry about it.

Remember, so it doesn't repeat itself. It's a learning curve from commercial but it's good steady money. I wouldn't give up on it.

I used to play bass in a country&western band, and one day we met up with another band just to jam and have some fun. The other bass player asked if I wanted to try his bass (a very expensive Alembic) and as I lifted it up to throw the strap over my head stuck the neck right into a ceiling fan... awkward. Haven't thought about that in years.

I don't move furniture...maaaaaaaybe a sofa every once in a great while.

I was messing around with my brother's guitar and tried to throw it over my shoulder like the cool 80's band....Landed on the head and broke it off
Got it repaired before he found out.....But you know how it is. He was pissed....you could tell.

I hate that when that happens....

Don't feel bad.

Some people throw empty beer cans into ceiling fans just for laughs.

Today my helper hooked a cord that was taped to the floor for a lamp on a end table, and with the wand still on the carpet he back hand caught it.. 8) My stomach dropped!! And congratulated him after we were in the van..

First thing she said was “That can’t be replaced”. As if it had sentimental value and was anything but a slightly corroded, old lamp. She was directly supervising me at the time, instructing me on how to best untangle the base from a mess of computer cords.

Lady was real anal. She made me run in hoses through the garage, closed the garage all but 3” then covered the door to the garage with towels and blankets secured with masking tape. I have since ordered a door guard.

Don't let a customer like that get you down. They happen. Over time you start to pick them out and price high enough to either make all the extra effort worth while or that they hire someone else. Or learn to walk away.

At one job a realtor was having me clean a 3rd story condo he was selling for an old lady that was in the hospital. He asked me to move "everything", and I agreed to do it. I had a decorative plate in one hand, picked up a lamp with a glass shade with the other, the cord of the lamp caught causing the shade to fall off hitting the plate, smashing both. $500 job, never did get paid anything for that one even though I checked the value of the plates and I could have replaced it for $50.
