I never had a onboard softener just onboard water which were filled off a water softener containing iron fighting salt pellets.

Never used one in western mass very soft water...
Descaled one time,ct water that month.
Noticed a drop in temp an knew what was up...

Used the liquid version once, about a year ago. Seems to have worked.
