John died yesterday of cancer. We have been working with John for the last 10 years on heat exchange control systems http://www.hotheatexchangers.com/Simplicity.html . John's shop is just over the Skyway bridge from us in Sarasota.
Just 3 weeks ago we were talking to John and he was complaining of lower back pain. He went to the doctor the next day. It turned out that it was cancer.

John was a character in this industry. He reminded me of Ed Yorkk. One of the stories that he told me was when he was in his late 50's he built a cabin on an island. I think that it was on the Ohio river. He bought logs and transported them on barges up the river and hired a large crew to cut the logs with chain saws only. I remember him telling me that he had so many chain saws running at one time that he had one man sharpening blades and swapping out chain saws full time. The cabin that he built was very large, not just a small cabin like you would think.

If anyone has any other stories about John, please add to this thread.

So sorry to hear of this. It sounds like my father, he had the back pain that would not go away, turned out to be prostate cancer.

Awful, rest in peace John.

John built my heat exchanger for my Hurricane over ten years ago and it still runs perfectly to this day,not a leak and great heat everyday. This was back when John worked out of his garage and we had to be all stealth because of his HOA. John took great pride in his work and was a true craftsman.

Hi:

I loved to talk to John, and knew nothing was going on.

Does anybody have an address for his family?

Sincerely,
Dale

John Hurtubise
HURTUBISE, John age 64, ended his final chapter of life with us on March 6, 2012. Born and raised in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, John resided in Seminole, for the past 25 years. He was a valiant warrior but lost his battle to cancer in a brief two months. John was no longer in need of his non functioning vehicle and entered a new life. He was predeceased by his dad, Roger. Left behind and will be sadly missed by his wife of 45 years, Lynne (Thiessen); his mom Alice; sister Margaret (Reg); sister-in-law Penny Russell (Jim); nieces Tara and Dayna and special friend/adopted niece Jaci. His special daily greeters, bad black poodle (Ebony) and Ambaloo are feeling a definite void in their lives. John's life evolved around his many special friends, including but not limited to Jim and Norma, Roy (a thought of son) and Louise, Don and Denise, Jerry and Melony, Donna, Jeanette and Peter, Trevor and Laurie, Polly, and Richard. John excelled in his business world, always thinking of better ways to improve, design and develop equipment. John was very proud of his protégés, namely Roy Moore (North Bay) and Don Abel (Largo) who carry on his legacy. John has had a whirlwind of a life, never resting, always thinking of his next adventure. That being said, he is gone, however there are other eyes watching him, coming and their voices ready and shouting: "here he comes!" His next project, who knows, perhaps a newly designed stairway to Heaven. Special gratitude to Dr. Beth Carlson, Dr. A. Hakki, Dr. Kevin Ache, Nurse Danielle, all staff of Florida Cancer Specialists, Woodside Hospice. Morton Plant Emergency, and St. Pete General. To celebrate John's Life, all are welcome to join us on Sunday, March 11, at 3 pm at Seminole Christian Fellowship, 10202 131st St., Seminole, 595-7940. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , SPCA, World Wildlife Federation would be appreciated.

wow...bad deal..

sounds like my father: lower back pain and no chiropractor made it better nor any doctor prescribed meds. Turned out it was cancer all over his spine. Three weeks later he passed away at age 54. Three days after his birthday.

I bought a custom heat exchanger for my first tm from John. Somehow that pos Chemtex caught on fire a few months later. Only things I was able to save were the exchanger and hose reel. I had no use for the heat exchanger so John put out the word and sold it for me to someone he probably could have sold them a brand new one. Super guy. He will be missed.

I talked to his partner Don the other day as they are building me custom poly waste and fresh water tanks. Don said that they will do their best to keep everything going. Very sad, John was very talented. The industry has lost a great guy.

Wow. He'll be missed.
It happens fast! A friend here past away from brain cancer, was in remission then it came back and he was gone within a month.

I ordered a belt tensioner for my Big Red's 59. He shipped it to me but it got lost. I just happened to be vacationing in Orlando so I called him up and asked if he could make another one and I would just pick it up. So that's what we did. Met him at his shop. He was just starting with the plastic tanks and was showing me what he could do. He had a genius about him.

You always wanted to call John when you had just a little extra time.
Just for the education.
