OK. I have to chime in here.
I did a key note over a year ago on what I call The Tablet Wars. I won’t bore you with the details but I will say that Windows and Android tablets are not ready. They’re getting closer and in 12 months or so the platforms will be excellent; with Windows 8 being the clear business winner. We own every major phone and tablet as part of our
ServiceMonster 5 platform rebuild (see facebook pic below).
I left the iPad out of the “their not ready” group because, for what it is, it’s an amazing device. I have discovered the resurgence of some old hobbies of mine, and the kids love it. The iPad is also a great research device. As far as a business device, it’s not much more than a blown up iPhone. Right now anyway.
For business it’s the open platform that will eventual win out. Apple is making the same mistakes today it made 30 years ago. Those “mistakes” are strengths in the consumer market, but the business community needs customization beyond what Apple is willing to allow.
Regarding the Acer:
It’s defiantly best of breed for the first generation of products. The detachable keyboard is a great design. You could mount the keyboard in your truck for heavy data entry, and carry the tablet in with you for emailing your invoice, updating your orders, and recording your payment.
I suggest waiting though. The Acer needs regular maintenance to keep it running at good performance. And I wouldn’t want to load anything of real power on it. Given all that, I’m impressed with the device as a whole, it’s the OS that is a problem. Windows 7 can be tweaked so that is works, well, just ok. Windows 8 should be much, much better.
End Game: It’s the apps.
ServiceMonster 5 will have a Windows tablet specific interface, along with Mobile 3 and a cross platform “desktop” version, so you can use what ever you like. But if your going for real power, The
ServiceMonster Tablet version will be the way to go.
Shh. Thats
ServiceMonster Mobile 2. You can see it at connections.
