Not a magic number but a practical one. Comes a point if the volume is too small then why bother.
If you have a great %% return but it only = 4 jobs, is it really worse all the back office work?

Overall dont do direct mail unless you plan on hitting that target every 4-6 weeks forever.

Are you a owner op?

If you want to drum up work this time of year be prepared to get a piece in the home you want to attract at least 3 times before they take notice. 98% or more of the cards will not get noticed, maybe a percent or more will get attention when spring hits. If your piece really rocks a hand full may save it for later use.

Are you a multi trucker?

If so you should be using every and all resources like EDDM, print media, local radio and TV, website, Google plus, Kudzu, Yelp, Service Monster FMS or DYS reminder cards, 5 arounds and so on and so forth to keep them boys busy.

Heck, one 40 truck company here will even give away 4 free rooms of cleaning for ever job referred just to keep their heat exchangers from freezing in February...

So basically no one here does post card mail outs?

Not worth the money?

1. I do for tile/grout on very specific routes.

2. Also sometimes will just do an EDDM for reminder card because so many of our clients are concentrated anyway.
Around same if we just sent individually.

The question is not "if it works" but how and if its the right fit for your specific goal.
