I bought a new 21 hp briggs a few weeks ago.. had Jon Don do the wiring for it.

Now out of the blue it wouldn't start today.. I checked all the wiring and it looks good.

* Won't turn over
* Fuel pump works
* There appears to be power heading to the starter, when I mess with the wire it sparks on the relay.. guess that means its getting power

* There is a clicking noise when I turn the key, but think it's coming from the carb or something.

* Would a ground wire that was grounded directly on the starter cause it to fail electrically?

Past the starter it seems to be a no go.. usually if it was a cut off switch the engine would still turn over. It has a new battery with newer battery cables. I can easily turn the engine and blower by hand too, so its not locked up.

Have you tried grounding it directly to the frame?

Check the wires terminated by the oil filter

I tried grounding to the frame with no results.

I checked the oil cut off switch and it looks like a soild hook up to the ignition switch. I wonder since it was grounded to the starter it fried the starter.

Won't turn over

see if the BLOWER will spin .
grab the belts or coupler (which ever is applicable)
and see if it turns .

you should be able to move it some even hooked to the engine .
It will "relatively" easy til the engine gets to the compression stroke.

if it won't move at all, the blower is struck .
(That's not a big deal and generally be unstuck with a pipe wrench on the pulley or shaft

edit....OOPSS....never mind

I can easily turn the engine and blower by hand too

It can only be a few things, check all wires, and check battery terminal connections. If you have a volt meter, check the voltage going to the starter. If you can remove the starter, then go have it tested.

Re: New engine won't start after a few weeks...? ***UPDATE**

Thanks guys for the help, might take you up on that Don.. Thanks Bob that is the engine, I got it through them with free shipping:)

So I was able to get it started by hooking jumper cables directly to the starter. As soon as I did that it sparked and engage the starter.. I pulled it away as soon as it sparked.

I was able to start it normally with the key.. and did that a few times. Then it did it again and I had to touch the starter with the jumper cables.

Now that you've jumped it directly, look at the solenoid.

Turn the key over, and check the voltage before relay to the starter. Don't do a spark test, you can fry a starter doing that. That'll ensure power is getting to the relay. If no power then you have a bad connection at the battery. If there is power there, then you test with a volt meter again at the starter while attempting to start the machine. If there is no power there, but there is before the relay/solenoid, then it'll tell you the relay is bad/faulty.

I can't tell but is the relay removable ? If so it can be replaced, if not you'll need a new starter.

Normally the problems you're having is caused by corrosive battery terminals, or a bad wire connection.

I guess it could be an ignition wire if applicable.

I don't know a ton about this engine, just trying to walk through simple diagnostics.

You have a loose connection somewhere, more than likely..

Could be at the starter, could be at the key.

Vibration of starting is causing a connections to break, or engage.

Just my guess.

If you had bought t locally you could have just drove it back and had it fixed under warranty.

It's weird the engine is working fine after I sparked the starter.

John, I agree going local is the way to go, but i saved $600+ by going online through that website. You know us owners, always trying to save a buck.

I moved that ground they hooked up on the starter.
