Well Chem Dry strikes again.. I really have nothing against them but their local technician and company are real crackerjack bunch. Customer on the Retail side called us and informed us that they they had CD Clean their carpets and a cat spill as well as a rug. They area with the cat urine problem is now whiter (I understand how to fix this problem), but her rug, which was cleaned in place (doe!), has bled blue dye on the carpet. I have a few ideas on how to fix this problem.. But thought I would see what everybody's opinion on how to correct the die bleed is. I don't know the fiber type off hand, but pretty sure we installed a nylon cut pile in their house.

Be sure you are not taking on someone else's problem. You don't want the home-owner to hold you responsible for something another cleaner caused.

If you try to correct dye bleed, try a reducing agent. Depending on the fiber, type and amount of dye present - our Coffee Stain Remover may work. You could also consider one of the two part red stain removers such as Red Zone or Red Relief. Streepene is about the strongest reducer. BE careful if you use that product. It can do damage beyond removing unwanted color.

Insufficient information is the area rug is it wool, handmade, machine made synthetic???

Most handmade rugs use Synthetic indigo and some handmade rugs have a lot of loose indigo that has a propensity to crock onto carpet if this is the case you should be able to extract to remove. Indigo doesn’t protonate like an acid dye it combines with O2 to make a larger molecule a reducer is used in the dye process to strip O2 allowing the smaller dye molecule to penetrate fiber then oxidize to form a larger molecule and a very strong stable dye if this is the case???? a reducer is the last step to try.

Regardless I would Pre-vac the hell out of the area first, then test extract a small area first with just hot water turn the rinse up, if that doesn’t work I would try a high pH pre-spry like a traffic lane cleaner if that doesn’t work then a reducer.

Well what I knew, you knew.. Chem Dry had already tried to correct the problem I found out. Situation as it was found. People called us to do our best to fix the situation so they don't hold us accountable. They simply did not want to go through the hassle of holding chem dry accountable. The carpet was 3 year piece of WHITE Karastan Tuffed Nylon Cutpile. Our company has been in carpet retail long before cleaning. First fix were Urine spots.. Chem Dry has used purt in a pale and soaked down the spots. Didn't use water claw or similar devise and homeowner later noticed water marking below that spot on his drop cieling tile. (Was not there before they treated. So they simply didn't rinse and definatly didn't extract enough moisture. Simply O2 System took care of these spots. The Rug Bleed was where they either cleaned the rug in place or they put the rug down on wet carpet because there was band of die and latex bleed from the wool Nourison Wilton all around the edege of the rug. Well I went through all the suggestions here in order to a T (Both replies were suggesting what I was thinking.) didn't budge the dies and they didn't want strong fumes or furniture moved out of way for the fourth.. We picked them us up a cleaning client so i'll try som 30 Vol Peroxide or some fresher red relief next time I'm out there. Very agitating to see things like this happen when they could have all been simply avoided. I guess that is how get new customers though. I just need to learn from their mistakes.

thanks all for the suggestions :)

It is very important that rugs with natural fibers, such as wool or silk, are washed and not just cleaned in the home. If you are using wall-to-wall rug cleaning equipment or home-made solutions to clean your rugs, then chances are there is a good amount of residue left behind in the fibers of the rug after the cleaning process is complete.

That carpet be long gone.. they replaced with wood in 2012, we sold them a nice area rug to put down and sold entire 2nd floor in carpet, as well as basement, cleaned for them about 30 times or so since then. Great customers!
