I mostly use water based even on furniture. I will on occasion use a solvent. I prefer Bridgepoint in both cases.

I love hardball on most surfaces carpet tile furniture stone showers and the like. No film at all....

I never use solvent based protectors even on upholstery. I want to live a looong life. Scotchgard (water based), the same stuff I spray on carpets. Works great, never any problems.

I used solvents 18 years ago but the odor was too strong, water based is all I will use.

Just to clear up a few misconceptions:

1. Solvent-based protectors now have a much milder odor.

2. The component that you don't want to breathe,
is the fluorochemical (water or solvent based).

3. Solvent-based fluorochemicals provide the best protection period.

4. New solvents can also meet VOC limits.

You should definitely mask up when spraying a solvent. Just because something has low or no odor doesn't make it innocuous. The way we work we are inhaling deeply and are in close contact with the chemicals we use. All solvents are toxic and can cause damage to internal organs such as the liver and kidneys. The damage they can cause to the lungs is irreversible. The cancer they cause will really take you out of your game.

It is good practice to wear a respirator for ALL fluorochemicals.

You can also minimize the risk:

by using a long sprayer extension,

and keeping the spray tip close to the carpet or hard surface.

One ample coat of Ultraseal Impregnator,
should be sufficient on most grout lines.

seems that......... Cobbs and hardball are very popular.. Are they about the same type of product? what differs. I have heard lots of good things about cobbs protector

My wife swears that the Cobb stuff is really good. She seals lots of grout, so I trust her on this.
