If you send your tech to a carpet cleaning class,do you:

  • Pay for the class?
  • Pay for their time while taking the class?
  • Pay hourly minimum or full hourly pay while taking the class?
  • Pay for the test and certificate if they pass?
  • Tie any of these (say passing the certificate test) to a raise?

What do you do?

In a way....... certification in various categories are going to be required for higher level position. Although entry level certs are seen as basic and stepping stone, no pay increase just for passing a test. I have two tech's that recently passed the AMRT certification. They didn't receive a pay increase but are working towards Master Cleaner status which when the achieve that they will receive a pay raise.

Yes full hourly. If they have overnight lodging we even pay a Per Diem too.

Even the thieving prick I used to work for paid for everything when I took a class.

I seem to remember an instructor recommending that an owner make the tech pay for his own classes, but I think he was related to my former employer (see #1)

I have a tech that is going to start taking classes this year, I will be paying 1 thru 4

Full pay Ofer~ not sure it is even legal to do it differently but we wouldn't. This would be a big negative message in my opinion.

We start every employee at a base pay rate.

We give them $1 per hour raise for the first 3 certifications they pass. We expect a 85% or better grade for the raises. By doing this our company average is 92%.

After that all increases are given on merit.

We also require them to stay with us for one year or repay the cost of the testing & training. This is prorated for if they leave early. This includes early termination because they violate any company policy.

It is very common for companies to pay for your master’s degree. They then expect you to stay up to five years to recover their investment. I took this principle and applied it to our training.

All good points. Great to learn from astute business owners.
Thanks.

Tom, if you feel comfortable disclosing: What is your base rate? and do you pay only on an hourly base?
