i was in san diego two mos back. they had little bikes and two different types of scooters that you could rent.

absolutely genius whoever came up with it. if it was just the wife and i we woulda used em but we have 3 small kids i wouldnt trust around traffic

South bend has a program called lime bike. Lime green bikes for free use. You see them on sidewalks everywhere. They are chipped and get rounded up occasionally for maintenance then placed around town again.
We see them up here in niles once in awhile.

SF has at least 3 different such bike rental compaines, SF also has 2 or 3 stand on scooter and 1 riding scooter rental companies.
I think Paris started having these over 15 years ago.

I wouldn't let the kids ride on most roads here either.

They put bike lanes in with the cars here and passed laws that are suppose to give riders 3 feet. Yeah lots of people dying on bikes here.

Germany is the only place I've been to that kept the bikes off the roads.

Twist grip throttle also when you don't want to peddle.

26 mph in top gear (sure could use more gears) and peddling like crazy while using the twist grip throttle too
