I've always been led to believe the odor during cleaning comes from the off gassing of the natural sulfur content of wool that can vary sheep to sheep or herd to herd.
Might be fiber that looks clean bet it really is not clean, left over residue bacteria smell like that dirty old sock

Maybe your water isn't as cold as mine, lol. I just cleaned two rugs today, and I couldn't smell any wet animals.

I was hoping for an answer as well.
Has nothing to do with temp and or cleaning product being used, in my experience.
Why don't you have Ms. Travis or any wool expert answer that.
Also (not same issue) about some of the wool rugs that come with a strong odor that nothing seem to be able to take out.

We have herds around here they go by once in a while, they're great weed wackers.
I guess it's the wet dog effect a dog smells wet so when we clean wool especially with bi sulfite in some of theses natural fiber cleaners it reeks.
But ya not always. I wonder if more or less processing of the wool makes a difference?
Like a raw cotton to a more refined cotton.
