Adhesive on carpet

Today I was cleaning a rental and the neighbor came and asked if I would come take a look at his place. So I went over only to discover that they had applied some sort of stick on tiles over there carpet. When I asked why he said to protect the carpet. When they peeled the tiles up it was nothing but an adhesive nightmare all over the carpet. I was to busy to tru and clean his place today but said I would try and give a pass with my wand to see what we were dealing with. I presprayed with what I had mixed for the other place, Code Red and Citra Solv 2. Not much dwell because I was in a hurry but I cranked the heat to 240° and let it rip. What a nightmare of glue and stickiness. Made about 10 passes each one a little better but holy shit what a mess! I told him I probably need to treat with a gel and citrus. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? I'm going back at noon tomorrow.

green pad on a 175 scrubadub with whatever solvent spins your wheels

I personally like a precise 50:50 glug of delim and isopro alcohol in my prespray, recently stripped lot of tar out of old ladys carpet where they'd redone her driveway and she'd shuffled herself and her walker all through it

that they had applied some sort of stick on tiles over there carpet. When I asked why he said to protect the carpet

:headscratch::hopeless:

whole carpet, pathway or just an entrance?

gonna assume it's a low loop pile carpet (can't imagine tile staying put on cut pile)
can't imagine what moron would put tile over CGD either .....when they make thin runners and walk off mats :headscratch:

if they've been down for awhile with regular traffic, it won't be easy to get all the glue off .
Might look great when done, but a month from now w/traffic it will be resoiled in that area

100% citrus terpenes will be safest
wicked solvents like lacquer thinner or straight toluene would be fastest (but also greatest risk of delamination)

roto scrubbing with red or green pad will shear off the top...but also shove glue to sides of loops all the way to loop base.
You'll never rinse it all out and rapid resoil is almost a sure thing

if just an entrance area, the way to "fix" their stupidity right, would be to cut out the carpet and install sheet vinyl or LVT, or laminate.
(what they should of done originally instead of stupifiying it)
and honestly, a section at entrance wouldn't take much if any more time, effort and cost to do compared to attempting to removing all glue residue

that's so simple to do, even a Choo-Choo driver and pt time CC'er could do it ....and they'll be more happy, AND you wont get a call back a month later asking why the section is so much dirtier than the rest now

Sorry man! 3x3 areas in front of bathroom, by the door entrance, and by a desk. Low pile carpet. The carpet was fairly new. This picture does not do this problem justice it's so much worse. Those white streaks are glue.

Goomer said it best in the least amount of words

light application of solvents, scrub, rinse, repeat, repeat, repeat
Take if off in "layers" with citrus terpenes is safest

and I'd still pre-qualify them to the difficulty of 100% removal (without delamination or fiber distortion damage to carpet) and possibility of rapid resoil is real

What would be a good solvent to start with?

Sounds good! I hope I can pull this one off! Thanks for the help!

you can for the most part
It'll look/feel great when done .
just be sure to pre-qualify the possibility of resoil

cause the truth is, it's tremendously difficult to clean to the base of tight loop pile like that.
(no one does/can whether they "think" so or not) with a wand or RE

Got it as good as it's going to get. I used a Citra Solv II at 4 ounces to 32 ounces water in a squirt bottle (I would have mixed straight but I knew I was goingg to have to keep reapplying and was worried about to much solvent being used) and Masterblends citrus gel on the adhesive spots. Presprayed the room with *******s Citrus Phire and scrubbed with 175 and blue pad (Green pad was to much. It was killing the 175). Extracted as much as I could with wand (high heat and lots of passes)then resprayed spots and busted out 360xl and brushhead. This removed almost all the stringy adhesive that the wand couldn't pickup. The carpet was still sticky so I then took straight Citra Solv II and wiped across with micro fiber towel. This took all the stickiness away and then light rinsed. Client was happy 3hrs total. $200 the room was only 257 sq. ft. It's under what I try to make an hour but it was also a learning experience. Thanks for everyone's help.

So I got a text today. Carpet is still sticky after it dried. Went back and spent 2.5 hrs trying to get the adhesive out but it just won't. Tried Citra Solv, rubbing alcohol, citrus gel and everytime it dries it's sticky.

'magine that

encRap it with straight encrap juice
Or get a 2 gallons of lacquer thinner and three dozen microfiber towels to work it by hand 3 sq inches at a time
pour the lacquer thinner in a bucket to saturate the MF towels

hope you pre qualified them to the nightmare THEY created

honesty, since the carpet looks pretty new, surgery might be the best option.
have an installer section in a new piece

Before anything else is tried, when was the last time you scrubbed in anything other than a solvent product?

You mixed up a nice batch of sh!t there.....likely oily too.

Now would be a good time to scrub in a good stiff prespray and make sure you flushed out all that other residue that may still be there from the products you used, so you can rule that out as contributing to the residue.

Either way, I gotta say I would go with Larry on the Encap route next if only out of curiousity.

Not too many other options really.

What's your experience with encap on stickies Lar?

Makes sense logically, but even if it is effective, the question would be for how long?

I actually flushed the sh!t out of it. Ran the rotovac over several times flushing and the dry passes. I'll try encap tomorrow.

pee-esss

I curious what possessed them to put tile over carpet at a bathroom door in the firstdamnplace :headscratch:

.LT.A.
They said they put it on to protect the carpet. I have a feeling the renter wasn't up front with me because there was a few spots in the middle of the room where some single tiles were. It turns out the renter moved out yesterday. So the property management company called me. I explained what was going on and they were very understanding. They asked what I would do and I said I would replace simply because of resoiling. I still want to try to get the adhesive out just for my own personal knowledge. They told me to charge accordingly because it's coming out of his deposit.
