And why.

Me?

Diversity.

The only way to make MORE money is to offer MORE things...or services or cogs or whatever.

It works even better when you can offer it to more or different people.

Yes, you can make more money offering more of one thing....but you make more money than that if you add on something else on to it.

It can go on and on.

YOU?

becoming a specialist in one thing..there are so many jack of all trade retards in this business. Reality is, have some knowledge..look presentable..show up on time and target your clientele. You can either have a shot gun or be a sniper..snipers make more money, less headaches. Thats business building 101

I owe everything to Mikey's board!!!!!!!!

Now after sucking up.

I'll say one thing would be finding and developing low cost. But. very effective ways to get in the face of my prospects.

Mikey's board has helped me to develop the mindset to innovate and stay on top of information relating to this business.

Hmmmm. Not sure how to respond to this without starting argument.

I agree that you need to know what you are doing in whatever you are doing.....that seems fairly obvious.

But you don't want to limit yourself to just one thing.
Even if your second thing is Scotchgarding or something as simple as that.

I'm thinking that your post has more to do with different services all together like maybe air duct cleaning or something like that.

If you can target just the services that you already have the equipment for like upholstery or tile cleaning etc....I think that is much closer to your "sniper" analogy?

Does that sound about right?

I'd have to agree with Dave Yoakum on this one... Mikeysboard is a phenomenal place to gain insight into the do's and don'ts of business success

This one observational gem I am about to share is worth all my time perusing this board....

doing the exact opposite of a douschebag like brokum is a sure fire fast track way to success

Our people is our number one asset, but there are so many important parts it seems silly to even have the conversation in the current form.

If I may be so bold Mr. Kenneth....Your one thing that makes your business successful is Reputation.

Not many can say that ....At least not at your level.

Yer welcome.

I disagree Brian- Our reputation surely gives us brand recognition, but it in no way makes us successful. Only providing exceptional value to clients does, and that comes from our people day in and day out.

If we don't always continue to do that and fall victim to believing what you stated, we will diminish rapidly. We will not let our success go to our heads.

Whatever works for you.

ThenDon't innovate and Don't stay on top of information relating to this business. If that is your business model.

Many ways to the top in this biz.

I know what works for me.

The best thing about a reputation is it changes with levels of service. I think your level of service creates your reputation and your reputation is your biggest asset.....It's just everything leading up to that point that creates it.

So yes, I agree with you.....My point wasn't very well made in my other post.

I disagree- our greatest asset is our people. Our reputation and good will would be of great import if we were trying to sell, but is only something to be continually worked to stay successful and that comes from our people.

The thing about success is it is an individual thing. No one can define that for someone else and everyones definition can be correct for them.

Brian..its about where I am for me. This board has been an invaluable tool. Aside from WRT..which I will start in a year or two..maybe. The most bang for my buck is rugs and upholstery. There are 8 million people in a 10 mile radius..if you're the right type of guy, and honest..you can easily do 500 or more per day cash..within two easy jobs taking a nap in the middle of the day in red hook by the water. Smallest amount of work for most money with least liability..I am picking up a few commercial guys here and there..but reality is, everyone has their own style. I don't want 5 guys and trucks and payments and more insurance etc..why spend 20 to make 30..i would rather spend 5 to make 15. I'm not greedy.

That's cool Jarred. Eveyone has their own definition of success.

I was speaking from a general point of view....which is usually all or nothing for me.

Sounds like you're on the right track.

I've go an upholstery guy on the Network in NY and he is the same way from what I can tell.
Seems like NY is the place to be for Upholstery cleaning.

Not very much wall to wall carpet?

Ken, KMA....trying to pay you compliment. lol

Jarred the name of your company is J+L Carpet and Upholstery. Sorry but that is 2 right there and then adding rug cleaning. That is basicly what everyone else does and it doesn't take much more to do tile

The new tire I bought for my van. Ever since i got that tire, business has been in the upside. I will always wonder what would happen if I bought 4 new tires? Oh where i could be now.... just like buying microsoft stock in the 90's.

My great clients make me successful.

I just got a $100 tip today from a client on a 500 job.

(It was for house cleaning in a 2 bedroom apartment.)

Dave you are so fos.

My post was the absolute truth.

It was a really, really easy job, even though I hate house cleaning.( I only do vacants or for sales)

One bath was never used and the stove and microwave were already spotless, refrigerator had racks and trays instead of glass(No carpet cleaning)

I split the tip with my helper.

Second tip this week. Got one for $20 on Tuesday.

This has been a crazy week. I had to turn down several jobs.

I was going to say this too... I've found that when you are the best in one area, you can set your price and choose your clients.
