Matt you can't create extra energy. You NEVER get more out than you put in
“Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another.”
EVERY time you convert that energy you lose some of the energy/power. (efficiency)
You are using the energy in the battery to create forward motion, run accessories, etc. To run the
alternator you are converting the chemical energy of the battery to mechanical energy via the motor to move it. No matter how efficient the alternator in the real world it will ALWAYS require more energy to turn than it can produce. The absolute best you could hope for is to return all of the energy required to turn/run the alternator back to the battery (100% efficiency) which yields no net gain. It is the LAW and not something smart scientist can ever overcome.
Look up some of those alternators you are talking about and find how much horsepower is require to turn one at max output. Then find the efficiency. You will find that the horsepower required (converted to watts) is more the alternator produces. Not to mention it adds weight which then requires more energy from the battery to move.
a brushless semi alternator operates at <72% efficiency
and weighs ~30 pounds
