A hurricane went through here on the 24th . Still 30 percent of homes without electric . There would be none with out the ice machines .

looks like a lot of the charging stations are still up on PEI assuming the maps are accurate


I know that isn't enough for everybody but the idea is the infrastructure grow and impoves....as it did with gas alongside the growth of automobiles

Charging station, gas station, both need electric power to run.

Can you show me where they went down to begin with?

Power doesn't necessarily have to go out in a hurricane or any other event that doesn't require stopping/throttling the generation itself. The areas most likely to be without power are those that have weak infrastructure and poor maintenance (like low tension wires strung all over Tpoles with trees all around). This isn't a prerequisite of power distribution although required in some cases. (high water table , terrain. etc) but it is mostly done because it's cheap.

It doesn't have to be the wheels only. They could put a belt onto the electric engine the same as gas engines to move the alternator. Alternators come in many different sizes to charge the batteries. The concept of that is to help keep the battery fully charged, not to recharge it from being a dead battery. So it's highly possible for this to be normal. Depending on plugging up the car only at a charging station or your house on a secondary charging cable is bassackwards on the technology improving.

I understand his explanation of how the alternator is like putting your foot on the brake. And I never thought of how a generator might be better than an alternator. But he left out how much wattage the alternator provided. Why didn't he bring that data to the table?

The electric motor needed over 900 watts to turn the alternator

But nowadays, a single alternator can produce power up to 2500 Watt, depending on the power demand. The power that can be produced by an alternator is determined by the alternator rating.

So technically from my caveman reasoning, the alternator DID provide clean, FREE energy

1.If all variables are perfect, that means that Tesla uses about . 22 kWh per mile or 220 watt-hours per mile. To put it into perspective, that's enough electricity to power 2.2 100-watt light bulbs for an hour.

2. Another google info. 30Kilowatt hours, which I think is 30,000watts

So you're saying that an alternator can't provide 220watts with an alternator that has the potential to provide 2500watts for #1?

And for #2, A recharging alternator or generator can help prolong the efficiency to not need a charging station as often

Let's get a little deeper.

A brushless semi truck alternator can put out 170amps with less resistance than a standard alternator.

Depending on whether your need DC or AC, it ranges from 9350W to 18700W

I can't comprehend your reasoning on how these brilliant electric cars can't recycle their own energy

Matt you can't create extra energy. You NEVER get more out than you put in

“Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another.”

EVERY time you convert that energy you lose some of the energy/power. (efficiency)


You are using the energy in the battery to create forward motion, run accessories, etc. To run the alternator you are converting the chemical energy of the battery to mechanical energy via the motor to move it. No matter how efficient the alternator in the real world it will ALWAYS require more energy to turn than it can produce. The absolute best you could hope for is to return all of the energy required to turn/run the alternator back to the battery (100% efficiency) which yields no net gain. It is the LAW and not something smart scientist can ever overcome.




Look up some of those alternators you are talking about and find how much horsepower is require to turn one at max output. Then find the efficiency. You will find that the horsepower required (converted to watts) is more the alternator produces. Not to mention it adds weight which then requires more energy from the battery to move.


a brushless semi alternator operates at <72% efficiency
and weighs ~30 pounds
