Pre spray is part of the job are you kidding me. 90 percent get asked if they would like me to re apply the stain guard. Bam easy as that and yes it works. Down once never have to ask again.... Ivebeensold

They are not comparable- one is a consumable supply to perform the actual cleaning, the other is am add on service offering.

I think they are comparable they both are a part of doing the job and i think it would be interesting to see how much we spend on each in a year. If I can get some response i have a theory that i would like to share . Does not have to be in dollars it can be a % thank you Jim.

Ken,
It all depends on how you tier your pricing model.

I went to outback the other day and they included veggies and a potatoe. (part of the meal).
I went to Ruth Chris last night and had to pay extra for veggies.
I didn't have to have the veggies but the steak alone probably wouldn't have been enough to fill me up...

No Greg, it would be more like Ruth Chris selling you cooking and seasoning the steak as an add-on.

Take care,
Lisa

Is this a joke??

Comparing presprays to protectors?

Seriuosly- how do you guys that don't use a prespray (unless a customer is charged for it)- clean???

If prespray is an upsell than what's next?
You call yourself a carpet cleaner but won't do any cleaning unless you get to charge more for even a bare minimum that should be part of cleaning.

Jim what's your theory? Is it about how many jobs get protector and the next time how much less prespray will be used, so you save money on prespray if you constantly sell protector? Is that the way you will be explaing it?
You could be right in a way....but its really complicated and I don't believe prespray cost is that big of an issue in this business.

I personally would not up sell pre-spray. It is a crucial part of properly cleaning a carpet and in order to protect my reputation as a cleaner i feel it must be used. After you are gone the client will only remember the results and will not take into account or even remember the up sell line regarding pre-spray. Also visitors will have no idea that the client cheaped out on the cleaning. I price my jobs by the sq. ft. as a complete and thorough cleaning in order to protect my reputation or i won't do it. The way i see it is that we are here to clean the carpet and that is what we are going to do. I do not even want to work for a client that dose not want the job done properly.
I do charge extra for specialty stain and odor removal.

Since the cost of prespray has to factored into your COGS, we sell more prespray since it's applied on nearly every job.

We offer protector but we actually sell very little in comparison to what's included as a part of the cleaning rate.

I prespray every job and it would be nice to protect every carpet i clean..

And what Greg Cole's customers say about his company is that they bait you with cheap prices and then want you to add on things that should already be done when cleaning the carpets. That is what your customers are saying about your company greg.. any chance you gonna change that so you aren't labelled a bait and switch company?

I dont see the problem with charging for prespray... automatic car washes do it. I don't. I tried it and it was problematic, so I just raised my prices on everyone. You are charging for it whether it is "included" or not.

Did they ask you if you would like to pay to have your steak cooked? because that's not part of the dinner.

Prespray? They pay for it 100% of the time. .01% don't want it... they have a fear of chemicals... whatever...

Fabric protector? I don't offer it, I SELL it hard. Since it isn't included, about 50% don't take it, but I tried pretty hard. Actually if they had it in the past, it is a bit more likely they take it again. I've had weeks where I've probably had about 66% buy it.

I've considered have (trademarking?) "Bronze", "Silver", "Gold" and "Platinum" Packaging. Bronze is vac, prespray, extract, dry and groom. No spotting. Silver will include Spotting, Traffic Lanes, Pet Pac* and deodorant.
*not to be confused with inferior Pet Package found elsewhere...

I think Gold will include showing up on an exact time or you get a discount back down to the Silver price, moving furniture and a maybe something else.

Platinum will be pull out all the stops, pre-scrub with the floor machine, maybe I will trademark "powerscrub" if its not too late... and include protectant, like a car wash menu.
